Doing The Silent Movie Blogathon on National Silent Movie Day, September 29

Silent movie fans note: we will be among those contributing to the Silentology blogathon on National Silent Movie Day on Tuesday, September 29.

CMB award winner Lea Stans and splendid classic film aficionados will cover a slew of cinematic topics on the Silent Movie Day Blogathon, hosted by The Everyday Cinephile and Silentology.

The silent movie-crazed (and movie crazy) gang at Way Too Damn Lazy To Write A Blog shall be posting mass quantities of our personal favorite classic comedy short subjects and cartoons for the occasion!

Very talented scribes, terrific silent film experts and ridiculously knowledgeable cinephiles will be celebrating National Silent Movie Day 2026 with cool writings. A few of the posters have been on our blogroll for quite a few years now - and with good reason - and the gang here is thrilled that Silentology, Silver Screenings, Crítica Retrô and nitrate glow in particular are still at it, consistently creating great content.

The lineup thus far is as follows:

Cinema Tereré | Lois Weber’s The Rosary (1913)

Cinematic Scribblings | Every-Night Dreams (1933)

Classic Film & TV Corner | Rudolph Valentino’s Relationship with June Mathis

Crítica Retrô | Forbidden Fruit (1921) and 12 Silent Gems essay

18 Cinema Lane | The Scarecrow and The Haunted House

The Everyday Cinephile | Buster Keaton's Silent Shorts

Bill LeFurgy | Mae Murray’s move to motion pictures and To Have and To Hold (1916)

Gary McCath | On Accompanying Silent Movies

Michael’s Movie Frenzy | Alice’s Wild West Show (1924)

The Midnite Drive-In | Dr. Mabuse the Gambler (1922)

nitrateglow | The Cinema of Priscilla Dean and Tod Browning essay

Silentology | The “Damsel Tied To The Railroad Tracks” Trope Revisited

Silver Screen Classics & Nostalgia | Silent Shock: Shocking Moments in Silent Cinema

Silver Screenings | Manhandled (1924)

Spotlight on Film | Zodiac Movie Guide: Silent Film Edition

Taking Up Room | The Power of the Press (1928)

The Thoughts of One Truly Loved | My Journey in Loving Silence essay

We'll close today's post by whetting the appetite for silents with some excellent 1920's cartoons, beginning with pre-Mickey Mouse Disneys. These were produced back in the days when the likes of Hugh Harman, Rudy Ising and Friz Freleng were, rather amazingly, working for Walt.

And. . . can't finish without following those with some Otto Messmer cartoons!
