Celebrating July 4th, 2021 with Our Gang and Billy Bevan
As usual, we at Way Too Damn Lazy To Write A Blog champion watching comedy films as an appropriate way to celebrate Independence Day.
Does this fit July 4th historically? NO - and who cares! Here, Our Gang scoffs at firework safety in The Glorious Fourth (1927). Many gags and ideas from this silent 2-reeler look familiar, as portions of The Glorious Fourth got remade in talkies as fhe very funny Hook & Ladder (1932).
Silent movie expert and film preservationist David Glass has put together his third Kickstarter for a silent era comedy Blu-ray/DVD release. Supported the last two, which funded retrospectives of comedy greats Lupino Lane and Lloyd Hamilton. This Kickstarter will bring the 1920's films of Mack Sennett Studio star Billy Bevan to 21st century Blu-ray. The fundraiser runs through Monday, July 26 2021 at 12:18 p.m. EDT.
Many of the titles on this Blu-ray set were directed by Sennett and Columbia Shorts Department gagmeister Del Lord
Films on the Billy Bevan Collection Blu-ray will include The Quack Doctor (1920), Nip And Tuck (1923), Lizzies Of The Field (1924), Wandering Waistlines (1924), From Rags To Britches (1925), Musclebound Music (1926), Calling Hubby's Bluff (1929) and co-star the usual suspects from Sennett comedies: Dot Farley, Vernon Dent, Andy Clyde, Madeline Hurlock, Kalla Pasha, Sid Smith and Kewpie Morgan. Look forward to seeing the pristine 35mm prints, courtesy of Lobster Films and the Library of Congress, that will be transferred for this set.
We'll top off the silent comedy-centric July 4th entertainment with today's "Rewind" encore edition of The Silent Comedy Watch Party, featuring Charlie Chaplin and the Universal Pictures comedy duo Eddie Lyons & Lee Moran. Happy 4th of July!

who
Today, substantially less than bright-eyed and bushy tailed after a weekend of big screen fun at the KFJC Psychotronix Film Festival, the comedy lovin' gang at Way Too Damn Lazy To Write A Blog wants to call attention to a Go Fund Me on behalf of one of our film historian pals, Nelson Hughes.
Nelson has forgotten more than most of us know about classic comedy films and silent era knockabout and curated numerous wonderful programs for his That Slapstick Show! series in NYC. We especially like his programs of rare American silent comedies from the Library Of Congress (such as The Celebrity Roast Of Charley Chase) at Brooklyn's City Reliquary and Astoria's Q.E.D.
The Nelson Hughes medical unemployment & housing fund has been ongoing, as Nelson has wrestled with and continues to wrestle with daunting and debilitating health problems. The amazing thing is that he has continued to do amazing work. Enthusiastically support thenfundraiser and understand how quickly medical, employment and housing issues can snowball.
Go Fund Me
GoFund Me for one of our colleagues and comrades in classic movies, our friend and fellow curator Nelson Hughes.
