More Jazz

Tonight's selection: some seriously propulsive hard bop featuring Archie Shepp, tenor saxophone; Ken Werner, piano; Santo di Briano, bass; John Betsch, drums.

Here's more le jazz hot with the Archie Shepp Quartet (Massimo Farao - piano, Wayne Dockery - bass, Bobby Durham on drums) from an October 2002 appearance in Paradiso Perduto, Venice.

This post, first, makes me miss this kind of music, which is getting more scarce which each passing year. Secondly, it makes me want to order some of those superb albums Archie Shepp recorded for the Impulse label in the 60's, the Danish Steeplechase label in the latter 70's-1980's, and various European labels since. LOTS more great stuff!

When I heard The Archie Shepp Quartet play a thrilling, swinging, blistering hard bop set in North Beach back in (oh dear...) 1981?, drummer Clifford Jarvis lost a stick in mid-riff. It whizzed past the side of my friend Richard House's head and landed on the floor somewhere.

After the set, Clifford came out to see if we were OK, chatted for awhile and bought us drinks. So Clifford - I don't know if he's still living - was a very nice guy, as well as a terrific jazz drummer.
